Spencer Awards celebrate commitment
and contributions to civil rights, inclusion

Cincinnatus recently presented the Second Annual Donald & Marian Spencer Spirit of America Awards, honoring the living legacy of the "first couple of civil rights" in Cincinnati. Honored for 2016 were: Bleuzette Marchall, chief diversity officer, University of Cincinnati (for an individual); the Ohio Innocence Project (or a nonprofit); and PNC (for a business). Dr. Marshall seemed to speak for all the honorees when she told "It's hard to think of my work as accomplishments because I just think of myself as doing my job and working to make a difference. This honor really just takes my breath away. I say that because Marian Spencer is a woman whom I knew of as a student at the university. She is a woman who I knew had made great changes and strides, not only at the institution but in the city proper".
